Be Deliberate | Episode 59
It has always been a desire of mine to be financially successful. Since I was in my early 20’s, I have had two big financial goals. The first was to have a net worth of $1 million by the time I was 40. The second is to be financially independent by the time I turn 50. I’m a very driven person, my wife both loves and hates that fact, and I have met the first goal and have 8 more years to achieve the second one. I don’t tell this to brag, but in this episode I am going to talk about one of my habits that I think has had the biggest impact on my success and I hope it can help you out too.
What To Expect From Episode 59
It’s been a while since we have had an episode that focuses on the mindset of an owner operator. It’s a reoccurring theme on this podcast, but the mindset of an owner operator has to be different than that of a driver. Over the years, I have gotten to know a lot of successful business owners, both in and out of the trucking industry. One thing that just about all of them have in common is that they are very deliberate in all they do. What does that mean? The dictionary defines deliberate as, “Done consciously and intentionally.”
In this episode, I use a lot of examples in my life that show how I have been deliberate in just about all that I do and how that deliberate mentality has impacted my success. We give some examples related to the trucking industry. I also show why that is an important habit to develop in order to realize your entire potential.
Hello Chris and Tyler I have been listening to the podcast and truly enjoy it. Lots of good information and different angles/ways to think about on getting started as an owner operator. I have been studying running my own truck for some time, researching, talking to other folks in the business that have done it, listening to you guys, and it all makes sense. I can get my head wrapped around most of it, then i get to mechanics/repairs. And its a true mental block. It stops there. Period. I can’t get past that. Ot seems most of the drives… Read more »
Tim, I feel your struggle. I am going to answer your question in more detail on an upcoming episode, but the short answer is, you don’t have to be a mechanic. The more you know about your truck and the better at mechanical stuff you are, the bigger leg up you will have, but it’s not a requirement. I’m mechanically inclined, but no mechanic. There are a lot of simple repairs, mud flaps, simple air leaks, replacing a light that I can do. I leave the more complicated stuff to the pros. The more you can do yourself, the more… Read more »
Can you talk about fuel discount cards in one of your podcasts? What do you use? If you ask drivers what card will get you the best discount, you will get 10 different answers. I think this is because of a lack of transparency so nobody really knows what the best is. Have you figured it out yet?
Hey Matthew, that is a great suggestion. I will put it on my list for a future episode. In the mean time, a quick answer is that they aren’t super transparent and that is a big part of the reason you get so many different answers. Another reason is because there is not really one fuel card that gives the best discounts everywhere. Some fuel cards may give better discounts for the big national brand truck stops, while others give better discounts to the Mom and Pop truck stops. In my experience, the best discounts are usually through the cards… Read more »
Me and my husband already have a llc . We have an Ein number. Can we use it for other jobs. Like hauling truck trailers? And also I not sure how to get a dot number and Mac number. I can’t find right website
Typically, you should be able to use that LLC and EIN for any legal business activity. You can call one of the Motor Carrier HQ coaches at 866-592-3978 and they should be able to answer any questions you have about getting your MC and DOT Numbers.
Hi how are you guys I love the show , it’s awesome podcast I’m on episode 59 , I’m a shuttle driver for sysco , while I driving I listen to the episodes, it’s just amazing all the good information, lack of knowledge is the biggest mistake of many owner operators. Is there an episode where you guys talk about company drivers that make over 100k per year , I mean if it’s worth for a high pay company driver to become an owner operator. I love all the advices from Chriss , I share all this info with my… Read more »
Glad you like the show. That isn’t a topic we have really touched on. With that being said, I think it really depends on what your goals are. If you’re making over $100k and are happy with your job, and that is where you want to be wage wise, it might not make sense for you to move. If you want more control and to possibly make even more, but it will be a lot of hard work and stress, O/O might be a better option. It is really about what you want out of life.
